REASON WHY OBASANJO DIDN'T SUPPORT JONATHAN

I have been wondering why Chief Olusegun Obasanjo hates Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency. The question is; what went wrong? To try to answer this question, I want to look at a few areas vis-à-vis the past and the present.

During the time of General Obasanjo as Nigeria military head of state, he had late General Shehu Musa Yar’dua; the then chief of staff supreme military council as his number two man.
The two men were later to go to prison under General Abacha. Both had felony charges against them. They were accused of having hands in an attempted coup d’état against Late General Abacha. While Obasanjo survived the prison, Shehu Musa Yar’adu was not that lucky; he died at Abakaliki prisons.

Obasanjo was later to be compensated with the presidency. When his time was up, he needed to also compensate the family of Yar’adu and late Umoru Musa Yar’adua; the then gorvernor of Katsina state was the bride. Obasanjo’s sole effort brought him to Aso Rock. He was a man of good heart but death cut him short. I am convinced he had a good heart as president of Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Yar’adu’s vice president Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was not meant to succeed him had he completed his tenure. One important thing though was the fact that Obasanjo chose Dr. Goodluck Jonathan because he needed a man who will be humble and who is not ambitious as vice president for Yar’adua; who was known to be a humble and easy going person but without the knack for extended pressure. Chief Obasanjo in his wisdom would have thought of the jeopardy that would have trailed Yar’dua presidency if he was matched with a strong personality as his vice president. Therefore, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s vice presidency was a deliberate act of compromise.

I herein believe that Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was chosen not because he had shown good leadership qualities but because of his meek character. A character that made Obasanjo believed he was an easy push.
Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency is purely the work of fate. The same man that oiled the wheel of fate for him is today in strong opposition of his character and ambition. The question I chose to ask is ‘WHY?’

The code was broken immediately Dr. Goodluck Jonathan ascended the presidency. He knows the game plan so he changed it. He knows that his chief benefactor is in regrets and as such would not want him to continue.
Not wanting Dr. Jonathan as president, I believe was the reason Chief Obasanjo did not and will not support his bid for a second term.

Another angle to the question is; why is General Buhari the new choice of Chief Obasanjo for the presidency of Federal Republic of Nigeria? I don’t think I have good reasons for a good answer to the above question. However I want to look at it piece by piece.

General Buhari was ousted in a coup-d'état orchestrated by General Babangida and his boys.
From the above, Chief Obasabjo may want to compensate General Buhari for the lost time. He may want him to occupy Aso Rock so the compensation could go round. I don’t think this is a good answer.

Maybe Chief Obasanjo wants to punish Dr, Jonathan for not listening to him even when he wrote an open letter to him.

Another might be that Chief Obasanjo considers Buhari a colleague who deserves to be compensated. He might be thinking that he deserves something better than the PTF. I also don’t see this as good answer.

Could it be that Chief Obasanjo wants to hold on to something having seen that Dr. Jonathan is no longer a boy he could trust. Maybe it is because Dr. Jonathan is a bloody civilian who didn’t know the sacrifice they the Generals made to keep Nigeria as a one indivisible country. It is better to dig it the Military Generals way; shon sir! A General is always a General; General Buhari and General Obasanjo. I think this is a better pair or may be a good answer.

Let me conclude this piece by leaning on good advice:
Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.
